Discover King Arthur's Wales with Saga
… and enjoy ‘legendary’ price of £529 for five nights’ half-board in four-star hotel
King Arthur and his Knights of the Roundtable have inspired writers and artists for centuries and director Guy Ritchie’s new film King Arthur: Legend of the Sword is set to keep the story alive.
Starring Charlie Hunnam, as King Arthur, and Jude Law as Vortigan, the film has been shot in stunning locations across the UK including Snowdonia National Park.
Saga guests can independently discover Snowdonia, where at least three lakes claim to contain King Arthur’s magical sword Excalibur, during a five-day break at the four-star Stradey Park Hotel & Spa in Llanelli.
The converted Edwardian mansion overlooks the Gower Peninsula and Carmarthenshire coastline to provide the perfect base to explore Wales and learn about the illustrious warrior Arthur.
Early Welsh literature has many tales which form part of the legend and at Gower rests Maen Ceti, a huge capstone known as Arthur’s Stone, where it is said the King’s ghost sometimes emerges from beneath it.
As well as mysterious lakes and standing stones, guests enjoy two included half-day excursions to Cosmeston Medieval Village and the Pembrokeshire Coast.
A path from the hotel leads to the centre of Llanelli, while walks and cycle trails along the Millennium Coast Park are another relaxing way to discover the magnificent shoreline this summer.
Did King Arthur exist?
According to Visit Wales, the 5th century Romano-British warrior chief’s battles against Saxon invaders have been recounted over the centuries and tales of his heroics became richer with each telling until he became a full-blown king, acquiring a round table’s worth of knights and supernatural sidekick Merlin.
