Discover Shakespeare's own story in Stratford-upon-Avon on the 400th anniversary of his death

Visit the birthplace of William Shakespeare, the playwright whose work is considered the greatest in the history of English literature, on a three-night break with Saga.

April 2016 marks the 400th anniversary of the Bard’s death and Saga guests can stay in the centre of Stratford-upon-Avon to trace Shakespeare’s own story.

The short break includes an orientation tour of the town with an expert local guide so guests can stroll past timber buildings to discover the site of Shakespeare’s birth in Henley Street and New Place where he died in 1616.

New Place was Shakespeare's home for the last 19 years of his life and this major heritage site highlights the playwright’s story at the height of his success as a family man, writer and prominent citizen of Stratford-upon-Avon.

The Royal Shakespeare Company performs in the Royal Shakespeare Theatre and the Swan Theatre on the banks of the River Avon so guests can perhaps book tickets to catch a performance while in the town.

In Bancroft Gardens, visitors can see the Gower Memorial, where a seated figure of the playwright overlooks statues of some of his literary creations. The pretty childhood home of Shakespeare's wife, Anne Hathaway's Cottage, is also well worth a visit.

Stratford-upon-Avon's location is perfect for short drives to historic towns such as Warwick and Royal Leamington Spa as well as villages in the Cotswolds and Worcester. Blenheim Palace is also within easy reach.

Saga guests stay in the three-star Best Western Grosvenor Hotel is in the heart of town, close to the train station.

The hotel’s Garden Room restaurant offers excellent service and fine food. Guests can relax and enjoy a drink in the Lounge Bar, where there is free wifi access, or treat themselves to afternoon tea in the drawing room (extra charge).
