Catalonia is an extraordinary region, from the heights of the Pyrenees to the rugged Costa Brava, and Saga’s new Spirit of Catalonia tour uncovers scenic and cultural highlights on an exciting 12-night Spanish adventure.
Guests explore the cities of Tarragona, Girona and Barcelona while staying in half-board accommodation for two or three nights in the contrasting towns of Cambrils, Sort, Camprodon and Roses, plus a two-night stay in Barcelona at the end of the holiday.
The tour starts in Cambrils, a small fishing town with long beaches and a marina. An included excursion visits the Ebro Delta, where 300 species of birds make their home.
Next is Tortosa and a visit to the port city of Tarragona, the first Roman settlement in Catalonia, to view the ancient amphitheatre, the Roman Circus and remains of the original city walls.
From Cambrils, the tour continues to Sort for a two-night stay, stopping en route at the UNESCO-listed Poblet Monastery at the foot of the Prades mountains. Aigüestortes National Park is next on the itinerary, where guests travel into the Pyrenees to take in the spectacular scenery.
The journey continues to the spa town of Camprodon, and during the two-night stay there are visits to the towns of Seu d'Urgell and Puigcerdà and the Valley of Nuria by steep rack railway.
Guests spend three nights at the seaside resort of Roses, with a stop en route at Besalú to visit the restored Jewish baths which date from the 12th century. A guided tour of Roses includes viewing the dramatic 14th century citadel and there is an optional excursion to view the Dail Theatre and Museum, dedicated to artist Salvador Dali in his hometown of Figueres.
A trip to Cadaqués, on the coast and featuring distinctive white-washed buildings, is where Dali spent time as a child, and it was also popular for many artists including Picasso to Marcel Duchamp. The tour heads to the medieval city of Girona, known for its walled old quarter, and on to Barcelona for the last two nights.
A guided tour of Barcelona reveals the atmospheric Gothic Quarter and includes entry to the cathedral before guests have free time to explore the city. The architecture of Antonio Gaudi awaits, plus the Picasso Museum, or for those who are ready for some retail therapy Barcelona is a shoppers’ delight!
