Guests travelling on Saga’s new Lost Civilisations and Natural Wonders tour of Peru explore the Amazon rainforest and dramatic mountain valleys where the Andean condor soars overhead.

As well as watching for wildlife the 18-night tour highlights the colonial cities of Lima and Cuzco, plus haunting Inca ruins including Machu Picchu, Ollantoytambo and Raqchi.

Guests fly into Lima for two nights to explore the city’s colonial elegance before taking a flight to Puerto Maldonado. From here a motorised canoe is the mode of transport to reach the Inkaterra Hacienda Concepcion (4Q), in the Peruvian Amazon.

Days are spent exploring the tropical rainforest’s waterways by canoe and taking hikes in the jungle. At Lake Sandoval there’s a chance to see black caimans and giant otters while on a canopy walkway guests can look out for white-throated toucans, squirrel monkeys and the three-toed sloth.

After a two-night stay at Sonesta Posada del Inca Yucay, to view Incan ruins at Ollantoytambo, guests take a train ride through the Sacred Valley into the mountains where the ruins of Machu Picchu sit among the peaks.

In Cuzco, once the imperial capital of the Inca Empire, guests stay for two nights at the Jose Antonio Cuzco (3Q), while the journey to Puno is punctuated with a visit to Andahuaylillas to see the Incan remains of Raqchi.

The next two nights are spent at Sonesta Posada del Inca Puno (3Q) and guests head out onto the waters of Lake Titicaca to visit the Uros community who make their homes on artificial floating islands made of reeds.

A scenic drive to Chivay brings guests to the slopes of Colca Canyon and the Condor’s Cross to observe Andean condors – the world’s largest flying bird – soaring overhead.

The tour continues to the Choquetico and two nights are spent at Casa Andina Select Arequipa (3Q). Arequipa, flanked by three volcanic peaks, is home to exquisite 16th and 17th-century churches and convents.

The tour returns to Lima with a transfer to Paracas for a three-night stay at La Hacienda Paracas (4Q). An included trip takes guests to Paracas National Reserve, a dramatic and desolate area of golden desert and cliffs that meet a bright blue sea. A cruise around the rocky Ballestas Islands is a further tour highlight to see the colony of sea lions and a vast number of sea birds.
