New: From Luther's Wittenberg to Amsterdam river cruise

Commemorate the 500th anniversary of Martin Luther nailing his 95 theses to church door

Regional flights available from Aberdeen, Birmingham, Bristol, Edinburgh and Manchester

Monk Martin Luther believed the church had too much power and in 1517 nailed his 95 theses to the door of Castle Church in Wittenberg, Germany, thus starting the 16th century Protestant Reformation.

During the 500th anniversary of this world-changing event, Saga guests can visit the sites associated with Martin Luther on a 10-night river cruise from Wittenberg to Amsterdam.

Guests embark MS Princess at Wittenberg, on the River Elbe, and join a tour of the sites associated with Martin Luther (1483-1546) and the Reformation. The town has been shaped by this historical legacy and Luther’s former home is probably the world's largest museum dedicated to the history of the Reformation.

The cruise continues to Magdeburg to see the Cathedral of St Mauritius and St Catherine, and the ‘Green Citadel’. MS Princess stops briefly in Calvörde, before continuing to Wolfsburg and Peine.

A full-day’s excursion into the Harz Mountains, northern Germany's highest range, and the historic towns of Goslar, Wernigerode, and Quedlinburg is also on the itinerary.

The 102-guest ship sails to Hanover and along Germany’s longest artificial waterway to Minden, negotiating the Schachtscleuse lock. The Hanseatic city of Bremen awaits with visits to St Peter's Cathedral and the 15th-century town hall, both in the market square.

A leisurely sailing to Oldenburg offers Saga guests a different focus – 21st century shipbuilding – and a tour of the Meyer Werft shipyard where the newest addition to the Saga ocean cruise fleet is being built.

Guests hop back on board MS Princess at Bollingerfähr and cruise into the Netherlands, stopping overnight in Groningen for a tour of Giethoorn and a boat trip along the pretty, peaceful waterways.

Amsterdam is the final call with an overnight mooring to allow time to discover the city’s attractions or join a tour which includes a cruise along Amsterdam’s famous canals.
