'Saga Bank Holiday Getaway - The perfect small ship cruise'

Saga’s Cruise Planner, James Langley gives his cruise top tip to experience what makes Saga Pearl II special

Sail away on a Bank Holiday Getaway to discover what makes Saga Pearl II such a special ship ¬– the small, yacht-like vessel has a traditional nautical feel, right down to her teak decks.

The six-night cruise from Dover on April 30, 2017 is ideal for new-to-cruise passengers to experience classic cruising with ports of call to Rouen, in France; Falmouth, in Cornwall and St Peter Port in Guernsey.

Saga Pearl II will moor overnight in Rouen and Falmouth to offer guests plenty of time to immerse themselves in the destinations.

Saga’s Cruise Planner James Langley is an expert at creating the perfect itinerary and says this short break is an ideal introduction to Saga’s small-ship cruises. He said: “If I had to pick one cruise next year that offers unique experiences, the kind you can only enjoy on a small ship like Saga Pearl II, this would be it.”

On leaving Dover, Saga Pearl II crosses the Channel for a scenic cruise along the River Seine to Rouen, the ‘city of 100 spires’. Rouen is a historical treasure trove and it was here Joan of Arc who was martyred in Place du Vieux Marché. The Notre-Dame cathedral inspired Monet’s cathedral series and guests can also visit the artist’s former home at Giverny to view the gardens which inspired so much of his work, including the iconic water lily pond.

Saga Pearl II sails back to the UK for an overnight mooring in Falmouth where guests can walk into town, seek out Henry VIII’s imposing clifftop castles or visit various gardens from the subtropical Trebah Gardens, the Lost Gardens of Heligan or the innovative Eden Project.

Falmouth is one of James’ favourite ports. He said: “Saga Pearl II is small enough to berth within the spectacular bay, so you can easily pop ashore and find a friendly pub for a Cornish pasty and some real ale. I also love eating fish and chips while overlooking the pretty harbour.”

A visit to glorious Guernsey awaits, a Channel Island that enjoys more than 2,000 hours of sunshine a year. Sail into the capital, St Peter Port, and stroll straight into the town, enjoy a ramble across the cliffs to look out over Pea Stacks, an important breeding ground for seabirds, or take a round-the-island tour and stop for a classic cream tea.

James added: “Our guests receive a fantastic, friendly welcome aboard Saga Pearl ll, enjoy superb cuisine and amenities, and have time to explore some wonderful destinations close to home. I cannot think of anything better.”
