Saga comments on Theresa May's announcement that a Conservative Government will consult on possible cap on social care costs

Commenting on Theresa May's announcement that a Conservative Government would consult on a possible cap on social care costs, Lisa Harris, head of communications for Saga said:
"Today's announcement by the Prime Minister that there will be a consultation on her proposed changes to care funding will come as welcome news to many families. Whilst it's right that people take more responsibility for their own later life care where they can afford to do so, and that the approach to funding is fair and equitable, there was clearly some concern that the Conservative manifesto as drafted did not have the balance right.

"Whilst it's true that some of the older generation have benefitted from the increase in house prices and strong pensions these same people have spent their lives working hard to build a nest egg for their families to inherit and to boost the transfer of wealth between the generations.

"The manifesto proposals risked undermining this savings mindset. Today’s announcement that the Conservatives plan not only to consult on social care but also to include a care-cap as part of that if they win the election on 8th June will be a relief to many families. Setting the cap at the right level will now be the key issue left outstanding."
