Saga introduces its first river cruise exclusively for solo travellers

No-fly ‘Autumn Colours of the Rhine’ sailing from £999

Saga’s first river cruise for solo travellers sets sail on October 14, 2016 for seven nights, offering time to explore some of the most popular destinations along the Rhine.

The Saga-exclusive ‘Autumn Colours of the Rhine’ cruise starts in Bonn, Germany, with coach travel from Folkestone via Eurotunnel.

MS Arlene moors overnight in Bonn and guests can enjoy a welcome cocktail party to get to know other passengers, the Saga cruise director and Solos host.

In the morning, an optional walking tour includes a visit Beethoven’s former home, now a museum dedicated to his life and work. Further highlights include the Electoral Palace with its elegant Hofgarten and baroque City Hall.

The cruise continues to Koblenz, where the rivers Rhine and Moselle meet. The confluence is marked by a monument to Emperor Wilhelm I and there is an optional tour to the Ehrenbreitstein Fortress.

The lovely wine-making town of Rüdesheim awaits, offering the perfect opportunity for newly-made friends to explore its Drosselgasse, a cobbled street lined with old-style taverns offering local wines, beers and coffee spiked with brandy. Guests can also opt to visit to Siegfried's Mechanical Music Museum before an afternoon’s sailing along the Rhine to Andernach.

MS Arlene, with a maximum of 52 passengers on board this exclusive cruise, continues on to Germany’s cultural capital, Cologne, which has more than 100 galleries and dozens of museums to explore. The city is dominated by the twin-spires of its Gothic Cathedral which survived heavy bombing raids during World War II.

After a restful afternoon’s cruising, MS Arlene moors at Nijmegen, the Netherlands’ oldest city, to view attractions including 13th-century St Stevens Church.

Arnhem is the last call with plenty of time to join an optional commemoration tour to learn about the World War II Battle of Arnhem.

The river cruise includes all meals, plus wine, beer and soft drinks with three-course lunches and four-course dinners.
