Last nights episode of the popular Channel 4 series ‘Great Canal Journeys’ saw Timothy West & Prunella Scales explore the fascinating waterways and vibrant culture of the mysterious and mighty Brahmaputra river.

Saga’s 11 night escorted tour ‘Passage through Assam’ takes guests on this same amazing journey with 2 nights in Kolkata to explore the city before embarking the comfortable air-conditioned MV Mahabaahu ship, in Jorhat, North East India, for a 7 night off the beaten track adventure along this important river.

The sailing along this wonderfully fascinating waterway, includes all the highlights of the show and more, including a visit to Peacock Island, the smallest island on the Brahmaputra and the opportunity to join Yoga classes on the banks of the river each morning.

Known for its exotic silks and lush tea gardens, Saga guests will learn about the importance of each industry in Assam, with the chance to participate in a traditional tea tasting and a visit to a Mishing Village, where the women continue the traditional craft of weaving cotton and silk on hand looms.

Saga’s adventure also includes the highlights of the show and takes guests on included excursions to both Majuli Island and Kaziranga National Park.

The largest river island in the world and cultural heart of Assam, Majuli Island is largely untouched by the modern world, but is at the mercy of the Brahmaputra and under the current rate of erosion the mighty river may have swallowed this fascinating island is less than 20 years time. Like Tim & Pru, Saga guests are treated here to a special performance of the Satriya dance performance by the Vaishnavite priests.

Kaziranga National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site is reputed to be one of the world’s finest wildlife reserves and home to 500 different species of mammals and birds, with the rich and fertile river making this possible. Also home to two-thirds of the world population of the endangered one-horned rhino, a jeep safari gives guests the chance to spot this rare and beautiful animal.
