The Spanish town of Águilas on Murcia's Costa Cálida retains some fascinating 19th-century British heritage thanks to the Great Southern Spain Rail Company.

The resort has been a well-kept secret until now and Saga guests can stay at the seafront Hotel Puerto Juan Montiel (4Q), just across from a lovely marina.

The 127-room hotel is on the edge of the town and has a swimming pool and spa. It also offers water sport options from windsurfing and kayaking to sailing.

Costa Cálida is known as the 'warm coast' because it enjoys 3,000 hours of sunshine and the fertile plains produce huge quantities of oranges and tomatoes. A local bus stops outside the hotel so guests can hop on to discover this hidden gem.

For those who want to see more there are excursions to the holy city of Caravaca de la Cruz; Calasparra, which is crossed by four rivers, and the historic town of Lorca. On 14-night stays there are further tours to Puerto Lumbreras, known for its ceramics; the former Roman city of Cartagena, and the coastal lagoon of Mar Menor.

There are three price packages to choose from on seven-night stays: Essential from £319, Signature from £449 and Signature plus from £719.

The Essential package is on a half-board basis and does not include the cost of tours. The Signature packages are all-inclusive with breakfast, lunch and dinner plus a free bar from 1pm to 1am serving local alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks. Tours are included in the price of Signature packages. Signature plus also offers Saga’s UK travel service and an airport lounge pass.

Guests who book their holiday between October 31 and November 26, 2016 or January 2 and 24, 2017 can stay four weeks for the price of three.
