Viva Cuba!

  • Take a tour across the island before it changes forever

  • The tour is part of Saga’s new “Discover” range

Everyone’s talking about Cuba and, following the death of Fidel Castro, there’s a fresh impetus to visit the island before it changes forever.

Saga’s Viva Cuba tour was created exclusively to explore the cultural highlights across the island; meeting its exuberant people, visiting historic cities and viewing fascinating architecture.

The tour is part of Saga’s “Discover” tour selection. Travelling with an expert tour manager, the 15-night tour starts in Havana with three nights at the Memories Miramar Hotel (3Q), a base to explore the city and discover the nightlife.

Cabaret in Cuba is not just staged for the benefit of visitors and guests can visit the Tropicana Nightclub to enjoy an open-air musical extravaganza in the Folies Bergères style.

After exploring Havana, there’s a visit to the Che Guevara Mausoleum before the tour moves on for a leisurely two-night stay at the all-inclusive seaside resort of Memories Paraiso Azul Beach (4Q).

Refreshed and back on the tour, guests stay overnight at the Villa Rancho Hatuey (2Q) for visits to historic Trinidad and the famous La Canchanchara Bar.

City tours of Sancti Spiritus to Camaguey are next on the itinerary before a three-night stay at the Melia Santiago de Cuba Hotel (4Q). From here guests can opt for a full day’s cruise from the harbour which has been an important port for five centuries.

Guests can also watch the Changing of the Guard at Santiago Cementario, a cemetery built for the victims of the war of independence.

The tour continues to Playa Pesquero for a three-night, all-inclusive stay at Playa Costa Verde (4Q), a lively seaside resort hotel near Holguin. Guests can relax on the beach and enjoy the facilities or opt for tours including swimming with dolphins or visiting the Museo Chorro de Maita which protects the site of an excavated Indian village and provides insights into the life of indigenous Cubans before the arrival of Christopher Columbus.

To round-off the holiday, guests return to the Memories Miramar Hotel in Havana for one night, offering time to take an excursion focusing on author Ernest Hemingway’s life in Havana, his home for almost 20 years. The tour includes a visit to his country home, which remains as he left it in 1959. There’s also a visit to Cojímar, a fishing town where Hemingway kept his yacht and took his inspiration for his Nobel Prize-winning novel The Old Man and the Sea.
