We're going on a beer hunt

Saga introduces new beer walk during On the Trail of the Vikings cruise

Every year the Danes each drink an average of 90 litres of beer – which places them in the Top 10 of European beer lovers.

Jomfru Ane Gade is a street dedicated entirely to pubs, bars, restaurants and nightclubs in Aalborg, Denmark, and during the ‘On the Trail of the Vikings’ cruise Saga guests can join a guided pub walk to discover the town from a beer lover’s perspective.

At each of the popular pubs guests can learn about speciality beers, featuring some that are brewed on the premises, and enjoy six beer tastings. The beers are served in a special glass, marked with the Aalborg Beerwalk logo, which can be kept as a souvenir.

Strolling from pub to pub, a local guide also highlights places of interest in the old town and at the final stop, in Søgaard’s Bryghus, guests are served a Danish treat: an open sandwich of dark rye bread with herring and curry salad and a Rød Aalborg Akvavit.

The next port of call is AArhus, in the centre of Denmark, regarded by many as the country’s cultural capital. There will be the option to take a tour of the city, with an included visit to the Old Town open air museum or a tour of Silkeborg, a charming town boasting lush countryside, glittering forests and beautiful lakes.

Hans Christian Andersen was born in Copenhagen and Saga Sapphire’s port of call features many reminders of the city’s fairytale heritage such as the Gefion Fountain and Amalienborg Palace.

Saga Sapphire also calls into Oslo, Norway, home to some 50 museums and full of galleries, cafés, the Vigeland Sculpture Park and the Royal Palace. This vibrant city with its handsome 19th century buildings and wide streets has much to offer.

The 712-passenger ship sails back Denmark with a call to Skagen, a town where mid-19th century artists flocked to capture radiant light on the ruggedly beautiful landscape. The picturesque old town features distinctive yellow houses framed by white-picket fences and red-tiled roofs.
