An insight into the criminal underworld on a Saga Cruise
Join ‘DCI Banks’ Stephen Tompkinson on Saga Sapphire’s crime-themed cruise.
Join Saga Sapphire for an exploration into the criminal underworld, with guest speakers including actor Stephen Tompkinson, who played the central character in the television drama DCI Banks.
A crime writer is also on board the all-inclusive Sunshine in the Canaries cruise which features a book club to discuss some of the best crime fiction and a film club with screenings of the greatest crime movies.
ITV crime drama DCI Banks ran for five series and Stephen Tompkinson’s talk reveals
the crime-busting fortunes of the tenacious and sometimes grumpy ex-Scotland yard Detective Chief Inspector Alan Banks, as well as stories behind his roles as Damien Day in Drop the Dead Donkey, Father Peter Clifford in Ballykissangel, Trevor Purvis in Grafters and Danny Trevanion in Wild at Heart.
The 14-night winter sun sailing from Southampton visits four of the Canary Islands plus the ports of Funchal, in Madeira, and Leixoes, for Oporto in Portugal.
Mount Teide is Tenerife’s superstar and Saga guests can opt to go hiking amid the volcano’s dramatic scenery or board a catamaran to look for whales. In keeping with the crime theme, Agatha Christie fans can also visit Puerto de la Cruz where the author completed her novel The Mystery of the Blue Train.
In Santa Cruz, La Palma, guests can discover the lush scenery and Taburiente Crater, one of the largest erosion volcanoes in the world, while in El Hierro, the smallest and least developed of the Canary Islands, guests can hike through the primeval forest or tour the mountains for views across the valley of El Golfo.
Saga Sapphire sails into Arrecife, in Lanzarote, which has an other-worldly landscape of lava mounds, craters and desolate peaks. There are tours to explore its explosive natural history guests including a trek through el Cuervo volcano, in Timanfaya National Park.
