Open day and night, it serves gelato, fresh pastries and homemade cakes – then as the evening beckons – it becomes a champagne bar, open until late.

If guests can bear to leave the ship they can discover the scenic network of historic canals and pretty bridges in Amsterdam and enjoy museums featuring masterpieces by Van Gogh, Rembrandt and Vermeer or listen to an organ recital at St Bavo Church in Haarlem.

The little-visited archipelago of Heligoland - once given by Britain to Germany, in exchange for Zanzibar - is a haven for migrating birds, and Saga offers ground-level and airborne excursions of its two rocky islands.

A horse-drawn carriage or canal boat are options for exploring the medieval charms of Bruges, where the main square is surrounded by Gothic buildings below a 273-foot belfry tower and cobbled streets are home to lace makers, chocolatiers, cafes and bars.
