An epic journey through 1,000 years of history awaits Saga guests on the Highlights of Peru adventure which includes one of the world’s most iconic views.

The mysterious ‘lost’ Inca city of Machu Picchu, thought to have been built in the 1400s, and rediscovered in 1911, is in a mountain setting more than 7,000 feet above sea level.

The high-altitude holiday offers guided tours of the cities of Lima, Cuzco and Arequipa, visits to more awe-inspiring Inca settlements in the Sacred Valley, and a boat trip on the world’s highest lake, Titicaca, where the Uros community live on floating islands made of reeds.

There is also be the chance to take lunch at a local home on the lake’s Taquile Island, where Inca terraces are used to cultivate crops and colourful flowers.

The 13-night adventure begins with flights to Bogota, in Colombia, and Cuzco, in Peru, where a welcome dinner is held at the locally rated four-star Sonesta Posada del Inca.

An included full-day excursion reveals the union of colonial and Inca architecture in the town of Pisaq, where the market offers colourful textiles and ceramics. A train journey and overnight stay Aguas Calientes features two chances to visit Machu Picchu, while time in Cuzco includes a dinner show, and a trip to Puno with a visit to the flamboyant Church of St Peter the Apostle at Andahuaylillas.

Other highlights are a drive through the stunning Colca Valley and the dramatic mountain pass of Patapampa, the chance of spotting condors – the world’s largest flying bird – soaring over the slopes of Colca Canyon, and seeing intriguing tombs hewn into the wall of the valley at Choquetico.

Arequipa, flanked by three volcanic peaks, is home to a huge 16th century monastery with brightly painted walls, and a Catholic University museum housing the naturally mummified remains of a young girl sacrificed to the Inca gods in the mid 15th-century, while the farewell dinner in Lima is at the Huaca Pucliana Restaurant, overlooking the ruins of a vast pyramid built with millions of clay bricks.
