Gerry and the Pacemakers, The Merseybeats and The Fortunes bring sounds of the 60s to Saga Sapphire’s Scandinavian Cities cruise

Dance and sing along to the sounds of the 60s when top bands Gerry and the Pacemakers, The Merseybeats and The Fortunes join Saga Sapphire as she sails into a trio of stylish Scandinavian cities in May 2018.

These Liverpool bands created an exciting Mersey sound with Gerry and the Pacemakers enjoying three number No 1 hits in 1963; How Do You Do It, I like It and the anthem You’ll Never Walk Alone.

Gerry went on to write Ferry Across The Mersey and Don’t Let The Sun Catch You Crying while working on the same circuit as The Beatles.

The Merseybeats and The Fortunes are also on board, each playing two concerts. The Merseybeats performed regularly at the Cavern Club in Liverpool and their hits include I Think Of You, Wishin’ and Hopin’ and Lovely Loretta.

The Fortunes formed as a close harmony band and their hit single Caroline was adopted as the theme tune of the pirate music station Radio Caroline while other hits included Here It Comes Again and You’ve Got Your Troubles.

As well as a musical trip down memory lane on board 700-passenger Saga Sapphire, there’s lots to do ashore in Copenhagen, Oslo and Aarhus.

The Scandinavian Cities cruise also features overnight stops in Denmark’s capital Copenhagen and Oslo, the capital of Norway, offering guests more time to explore and experience the local nightlife. The Oslo Ice Bar brings a whole new meaning to a drink on the rocks, where cocktails are served in ice glasses and the bar’s walls, furniture and artwork are all made of ice!

In Copenhagen, a city tour includes a call to the Carlsberg Visitors’ Centre where the Carlsberg Brewery was founded. See the old production area, the world’s largest bottle collection and visit the stables, home to the brewery’s Jutland heavy draught horses. There is also a visit to the Jacobsen Microbrewery & Bar to sample the brews!

Aarhus, the 2017 European Capital of Culture, is a Danish delight with an attractive waterfront and beautiful botanical gardens. Perhaps head to the ARoS Art Museum and walk through the rainbow-hued glass walkway on the rooftop or take a vintage train ride on the former Horsens-Silkeborg railway.
