Glorious national parks and thrilling cities make Saga’s tour of American western wonders an unforgettable adventure

The breathtaking natural beauty of the American west makes for a thrilling Saga holiday which marks the centenary of the Grand Canyon National Park.

Artistic and cultural demonstrations, wildlife days and a summer festival are among the events being staged at the Canyon as the USA celebrates 100 years since the park’s designation, and Saga’s Best of the West tour includes a visit to the six-million year-old, 277 mile-long UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Other highlights include a desert trip to the Mojave National Preserve, a tram tour with Ranger guides in Yosemite National Park, a visit to the Queen Mary cruise liner at Long Beach and wine tasting in Napa Valley.

The impressive Hoover Dam is also on the route to the Grand Canyon, where visitors might dare to cross the glass West Rim Skywalk, 4,000 feet above the riverbed. The 50,000 square miles of the Mojave Desert include the Joshua Tree and Death Valley national parks.

There are exciting city tours, too – Las Vegas by night, San Diego, San Francisco and the Golden Gate bridge. And of course, a tour of Los Angeles, taking in Hollywood Boulevard, with its star-studded pavement commemorating showbusiness greats, the iconic Hollywood, the Chinese Theatre, and Rodeo Drive, Beverly Hills, where the rich and famous shop until they drop.

Also on the itinerary is the music town of Bakersfield, associated with a distinctive country sound absorbing rock ’n’ roll and electric influences, created by stars such as Merle Haggard.

Accommodation is in three and four-star hotels, with two nights at each of the Luxor, Las Vegas, the DoubleTree by Hilton in San Diego, the Torrance Marriott Redondo Beach, Los Angeles, the Pines Resort in a forest beside Bass Lake, Bakersfield, and the Parc 55, San Francisco.
