Savour the famed local produce on a journey through Portugal’s historic wine-growing region on Saga’s new Taste of the Douro Valley holiday.

A tasting at the Quinta da Padrela fine winery in Tabuaco, and a visit to the port cellar of Vila Nova de Gaia, in Oporto, feature on the seven-night holiday.

A cruise on the river and a train ride through the Douro valley offer guests a leisurely journey to appreciate the medieval towns and everyday pastoral life that has hardly changed through the centuries.

Guests stay in four-star hotels, with the first two nights in Oporto to explore stately architecture and narrow streets, including the lively old fishermen’s quarter of Ribeira, the fortified 12th-century cathedral and a port cellar – with a tasting, of course.

En route to Tabuaco there are stops at the fascinating towns of Amarante and Lamego, while a Douro cruise starts and finishes in Régua. On board, guests enjoy another a glass of port while passing mountainous slopes, clad with pine forests and vineyards, before a wine tasting at the renowned Quinta da Padrela.

As well as the scenic train ride through the Douro valley, the itinerary offers a visit to Castro Daire in the agricultural highlands, sampling home-made delicacies and locally-grown tea.

There are optional excursions to the Viseu plateau, another respected wine-growing region, and the small city of Vila Real.

Viseu was home to a 16th-century school of painting which included Gaspar Vaz and Vasco Fernandez and its medieval cobbled streets lead to a square dominated by the cathedral and Misericord Church, while Vila Real is home to the Mateus Palace, a stately baroque mansion with sculptured gardens.
