Saga’s new five-night holiday In Search of Norway’s Northern Lights takes guests to Tromsø, gateway to the Arctic wilderness, to watch for the spectacular Aurora Borealis and join a host of unforgettable ‘Keep Doing’ adventures in temperatures averaging -10C.

There are two Northern Lights’ tours with expert guides; the first on a fjord cruise – sailing to the best points for a chance to see the electrifying natural phenomenon. Away from light pollution, guests stand on the viewing platform to scan the night sky for the ethereal ribbons of light.

The second opportunity is on a safari across the tundra to trace the Aurora Borealis from a private Aurora Base Station, complete with campfire. There are five look-out stations and the group moves to where the odds of sighting the Northern Lights are best. Tripods are set up and advice given on the best camera settings for photographing the light display.

The four-star Scandic Ishavshotel is the perfect base for the In Search of Norway’s Northern Lights adventure, set on Tromsø’s waterfront with breath-taking views over the quay. During the day guests can explore the spectacular scenery and join a host of once in lifetime experiences, including a reindeer sleigh ride from a Sami Cultural Village. Guests also learn about the indigenous culture, try Sami foods and join in a ‘joik’ – a traditional Sami song.

Further optional tours include being a musher on a thrilling husky sledge ride through the snowy Breivikeidet valley and a daytime cruise around Tromsø’s fjords to look for whales breaching the chilly water.

For 360-degree views of Tromsø’s sparkling coast there’s a ride on the Fjellheisen cable-car which travels 421 metres above sea level and an optional safari to view Tromsø’s mountains and fjords with stops at scenic villages and the unspoilt island of Sommarøy.

Saga recently launched its guaranteed departures policy,  meaning customers can now book with confidence that every tour date advertised is now 100% guaranteed to run.
