Sometimes called the 'Pearl of the Orient', Penang features seafront water villages of Chinese clan houses, lok lok street food, the 'Street of Harmony' where places of worship include the Goddess of Mercy Temple, the State Museum, a Burmese Temple and the Thai Temple with its 33 metre-long Reclining Buddha figure in his gilded saffron robe.
At the 99-island archipelago of Langkawi, guests stay on the main island with its beautiful beaches, mangrove swamps and duty-free shopping, where the Saga-rated four-star Aloft Langkawi Pantai Tengah Hotel is 200 metres from the Andaman Sea and beach.
A guided tour reveals charming villages, paddy fields worked by water buffalo, rubber plantations, the Batik Art Village and the tomb and legend of beautiful Princess Mashuri, who shed white blood after being stabbed on the false accusation of adultery by her jealous mother-in-law.
