Hike, dive & snorkel in the Sporades archipelago, including the real Mamma Mia! island

  • Included travel insurance
  • Guaranteed departures on all available dates
  • Experts every step of the way

Here we go again – the release of the Mamma Mia! movie sequel is sure to spark renewed interest in the Aegean of Abba fans’ dreams, but there’s still a way to appreciate the finer attractions of the region without having to make a song and dance about it.

While the warm sunshine and sparkling seas enhance the exhilarating atmosphere and relaxing beach days enjoyed by Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnan and Amanda Seyfried in the films, Saga’s Greek Island Adventure also honours regional culture and traditions, exploring important historical sites and woodland landscapes.

The 14-night, half-board holiday visits the lesser-known Sporades archipelago with a three-island tour of Skiathos, Alonissos and Skopelos with included mountain hikes, nature trails and boat trips.

Skopelos, the largest island of the Sporades, was featured in the original Mamma Mia! movie, and Saga’s guests will spend the last four nights of the holiday there, at the Prince Stafylos Hotel(3Q), which has beautiful views across the Aegean Sea to Haladiki.

It is a perfect base for walks from the mountain village of Pirgos through pine and eucalyptus woods to quiet beaches. Birdwatchers can also observe more than 60 species including eagles, vultures and kestrels, while an optional tour explores the history and architecture of the island’s many monasteries.

During a five-night stay in Skiathos, at the beachfront Skiathos Princess Hotel(4Q+), there is a series of activities, from walks around the wooded Kalamaki peninsula to unfrequented coves; visiting Skiathos Town by water taxi and viewing Evangelistria Monastery, where the first Greek flag was woven and blessed in 1807.

Relaxed and refreshed, guests travel by ferry to tranquil Alonissos for a five-night stay at the Marpunta Village Club (4Q). A full-day’s tour to the island’s natural marine park, an important habitat for the endangered monk seal, is one of the highlights. Guests can also opt to go snorkelling or diving, join a beach safari or meet a local botanist on a nature walk to see local flora and fauna.
