See finishing touches being applied to new ship Spirit of Discovery at shipyard

Maritime cities cruise features maiden call to Wilhemshaven

  • Maritime historian and shipbuilding expert on board
  • Six-night, all-inclusive, no-fly sailing
  • UK travel service to and from Dover

Saga Cruises loves to source new ports of call and Wilhemshaven, in Lower Saxony, Germany, is featured in Saga Sapphire’s new Maritime Cities of the Continent cruise from Dover on February 2, 2019.

From Wilhelmshaven, guests have an exclusive opportunity to visit the Meyer Werft Shipyard to see the finishing touches being made to Saga’s first new-build ship Spirit of Discovery which launches in July 2019.

A maritime historian and shipbuilding expert give lectures on board 700-passenger Saga Sapphire to enhance the experience during the six-night, all-inclusive cruise.

Saga Sapphire also sails along the River Elbe to moor in the heart of Hamburg, which blends its heritage as a free Hanseatic city with a host of modern attractions and legendary nightlife. It is also home to a Miniature Wonderland featuring the world’s largest model railway and a Saga tour goes behind the scenes of the control centre.

A guided walk through the cobbled streets of Edam is on the itinerary during a call to Ijmuiden, as well as an included tour of Amsterdam or a visit to the Zaanse Schans open air museum with its windmills, traditional houses and clog carving demonstrations.

Romantic Bruges awaits during a mooring in Zeebrugge or guests can continue the maritime theme with an optional tour of Antwerp’s Red Star Line Museum. Two million passengers emigrated from Antwerp to North America from the mid 19th century to early 20th century and the museum tells their compelling stories.
