Seine cruise marks 75th anniversary of D-Day

Seine cruise marks 75th anniversary of D-Day: DST France EXT 24436

As the 75th anniversary of the D-Day landings approaches on June 6, 2019, Saga guests can visit Omaha Beach and the cemetery for American soldiers at Colleville sur Mer, in Normandy, during a seven-night river cruise with a choice of eight departures including June 1.

The Impressions of the Seine sailings on 202-passenger A-Rosa Viva, along the Seine from Paris, also include a tour to Arromanches, where a 360-degree 'circular cinema' screens footage from the events of June 1944.

In Rouen, which suffered extensive damage and civilian casualties from bombing raids and a brutal battle between Canadian and German battalions, a walking tour reveals how the city was rebuilt after the infamous ‘Red Week’ of bombing, when its cathedral roof was consumed by fire.

Visitors can also explore the city’s historic links with the Vikings, the Dukes of Normandy, novelist Gustave Flaubert and Impressionist painter Claude Monet, and see distinctive abbeys, the modern Church of Joan of Arc and a 14th-century astronomical clock.

Further destinations are Caudebec-en-Caux, which has a 15th-century church; Les Andelys, a former stronghold of Richard the Lionheart in Normandy’s Calvados region, and Vernon, with an included excursion to Monet's house and garden at Giverny.

Guests travel from London to Paris by Eurostar and the all-inclusive A-Rosa Viva features a free 13-hour bar serving spirits, beer, wine and soft drinks.
