Set your own pace on guided five-day trek along the Way of St James: DST Spain EXT 28193

Walkers receive certificate of pilgrimage on Saga’s 7-night Spanish Santiago Trail

Five days of walking through lovely Spanish countryside on one of the world’s most inspiring pilgrimage routes climaxes with a tour of the magnificent cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, on a Saga’s new fully-guided holiday.

The Santiago Trail covers the final, scenic 120-kilometre stretch of the ‘Way of St James’, a route followed by hundreds of thousands of pilgrims to the shrine of the Apostle over centuries of devotion.

At designated points along the way, stamps are collected on a ‘Camino passport’ to earn an official certificate of pilgrimage upon completing the walk. The Saga package includes an expert guide on the route, as well as entry to and a tour of the cathedral.

As the way is well signposted, from the starting point in Sarria through the verdant countryside and quaint villages of Galicia, guests can set their own pace on journeys of between 20km and 30km each day, meeting walking enthusiasts and pilgrims from around the world.

Half-board plus accommodation over seven nights is in traditional guest houses and modern hotels, including Complejo La Cabana, built completely of wood, and Hotel Vila Peregrina, a quaint collection of small, traditional country houses with their own living areas. The last two nights at three-star Hotel Gelmirez in Santiagom. Saga transports the main travel luggage between hotels by road each day.

The terrain varies with some steep up or downhill sections, so a good level of fitness is essential.

Fascinating sights en route include the medieval town of Sarria, the charming town of Portomarin overlooking the lazy River Miño, a walk-up Mount San Antonio, the ancient pilgrimage hospital of San Salvador, and the medieval shrine of Santa Irene with a fountain that spouts water with ‘healing properties’.

In Santiago the architectural styles mix Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance, baroque and neoclassical, and a farewell dinner is held at a traditional local restaurant in the UNESCO-listed old town to celebrate walking Saga’s Santiago Trail.
